Awakening Your Worth: Understanding Regret with the 5W3H Method
This was my sharing during live #tiktok #peggyang57.
Regret is an emotion we all carry. It often shows up as a heavy reminder of what could have been. But what if regret isn’t a punishment, but a teacher?
I’ve come to see regret as a mirror. It reflects the gap between who I was and who I am becoming. When approached with awareness, regret can be transformed into wisdom.
The 5W3H Method for Exploring Regret
When regret surfaces, I use the 5W3H method as a simple framework to unpack it:
5W
Who → Who is involved in this regret?
What → What actually happened?
When → When did it occur? What season of your life?
Where → Where did it shape or affect you most?
Why → Why does it still sting? What’s the deeper reason?
3H
How did it happen? → The choices, actions, or circumstances that led to it.
How did I feel? → The emotional truth you experienced.
How can I transform it? → The lesson, the forgiveness, the release.
The Emotional Aspect of Regret
Regret often weighs heavy: sadness, shame, frustration. But here’s the secret — if you feel regret, it means you’ve grown beyond that version of yourself. Otherwise, you wouldn’t even recognize it as regret.
Regret is not the enemy. It’s a signpost of growth.
Moving Forward
Once you’ve unpacked regret, the next step is simple but powerful:
Forgive yourself and others.
Take the lesson, not the weight.
Choose what’s next, instead of circling what’s past.
